Smudging has powerful benefits for many reasons. It is a way to cleanse, purify, and effectively clear negative energy, whether it is soaked up in your house or within your aura.
It does this by changing and shifting the air element, and changing the ionic composition of the air.
Your house and belongings act like a sponge. They absorb energy, both positive and negative. Negative energy can get soaked up and will need to be released, as this energy can be held and will continue to linger. If negative energy does NOT get released, it can continue to reflect back into your environment and affect people or animals who live there.
Some situations where you would smudge your home include:
• when you move into a new home or space.
• before or after guests enter your home.• when an argument or an illness happens.• before meditation or a healing practice.
• if a room or space is generally giving you a bad vibe, or feels 'off'.
Now, your aura works in a similar way.
Your aura is the electromagnetic field that surrounds you - your energy body.
Every living thing has an aura.
Have you ever noticed how you feel when someone or certain people step into that ring of personal space around you? The vibes you are picking up are from their presence within your aura.
This field around you is constantly taking in and giving out vibrations. It is a natural flow of energy that never ends. If you are around negative people or situations, your aura will pick up these energies and they will linger and accumulate over time.
This can happen unknowingly as well, just by being around other people or situations (think about crowded public places, for example).
Some situations where you would smudge your aura include:• upon coming home from being around other people where you may have picked up other energies.
• when an argument or an illness happens.
• before meditation or a healing practice.
• if you are generally feeling 'off', or not like yourself.
Although there are a variety of different herbs you can use to smudge, the most popular in the modern era is white sage.White sage
is used to absorb negative energies (such as anger, conflict, illness, etc.), and release and cleanse the energy.
Use it to ‘wash off’ the outside world!
Some other beneficial herbs include:
• Cedar - used for protection, and often used to cleanse a new home and protect it from unwanted spirits or energies.• Sweetgrass - used for attracting new, loving energy.
• Frankincense - used to cleanse and protect the soul and also is said to ease depression.
• Lavender - used to invite spirits and safeguard against evil.
Although it is extremely beneficial to use these different herbs together, they also have a great effect when used individually. So how do you smudge?
Put your herb of choice into an abalone shell
(or other fireproof container), light it and let it burn for a few moments.
Next, blow out the fire.
It is the SMOKE that you want!
Use your hand (or a feather) to spread the smoke all around yourself first, then over the object or room that you are cleansing.
When smudging yourself – make sure to move the smoke around the entire outside of your body (cleansing your aura), under your arms, and even under your feet!
When smudging an object or room - make sure to fan the smoke into all corners of the room, around every object, and around the entire area.
It is also recommended that you leave a window or door open, to give the negative energy a clear way to escape. Incorporating a smudging routine into your daily or weekly life will have tremendous benefits on the energy of both yourself and home.
